The interaction of information science and cognitive sciences with emphasis on information retrieval
Pilecká, Věra ; Papík, Richard (advisor) ; Sedláčková, Beáta (referee) ; Rankov, Pavel (referee)
Mgr. Věra Pilecká The interaction of information science and cognitive sciences with emphasis on information retrieval (dissertation thesis) (Vzájemné ovlivňování informační vědy a kognitivních věd s důrazem na vyhledávání informací) Abstract Focus of this thesis is on the description of the interaction of information science and cognitive sciences with emphasis on information retrieval which is influenced by some of the cognitive aspects. The introductory chapter deals with the definition of information science and paradigms inspired by a cognitive approach (cognitive and socio-cognitive paradigm). Then a cognitive science is defined including its basis, methods and application. In the third chapter, a comparison between information and cognitive science is included, and their interaction and common interests are described. Fourth chapter focuses on information retrieval and influencing factors, including search methods, user information behaviour, and user cognitive characteristics and mental models. The final chapter presents two surveys focused on the use of intuitive and analytical information retrieval styles during searching on Google, and the perception of the differences between traditional and online teaching of the effective reading techniques. Information behavior and learning in the context of new media: Digital games and simulations as complex systems for information representation
Buchtová, Michaela ; Šisler, Vít (advisor) ; Steinerová, Jela (referee) ; Landová, Hana (referee)
This dissertation considers digital games and simulations as complex systems of information representation and explores their specific aspects influencing the process of knowledge acquisition. It focuses on process of mental model creation, information behavior and situational emotional and cognitive engagement. The methodological approach is grounded in variety of disciplines including information science, educational science, new media studies and computer science. The main method used is educational experiment. The use of digital game-based and non-digital game-based educational intervention is compared to similar program based on traditional schooling methods and classic lectures. The experiment outcomes are divided into four large segments exploring influence of digital games on process of mental models creation, motivation for future information behavior, situational emotional experience and social interaction.
Kidnapping Otherness. Tourism, Imaginaries and Rumor in Eastern Indonesia
Kábová, Adriana ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Vrhel, František (referee) ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (referee)
This dissertation is based on my research into distinction processes (Calhoun, 1994; Cerulo 1997) between tourists and inhabitants of West Sumba in Eastern Indonesia. The imaginiaries (Castoriadis, 1987; Strauss, 2006; Lacan, 1977; Anderson, 1991; Salazar, 2012) of West Sumbanese people about foreigners also emerge from diving rumors (Bysow, 1928; Allport and Postman, 1947/1965). Their origins, dissemination, and sharpening processes, as well as their consequences will be analysed herein. This case study demonstrates how mental models of otherness are formed and reified, how they clash, and for what purposes they may be utilized. It will also analyze how imaginaries influence behavior and may lead to miscommunication in West Sumba.

Free Concept Maps in Social Research
Balážová, Eva ; Remr, Jiří (advisor) ; Soukup, Petr (referee)
Diploma thesis "Free concept maps in social research" deals with the possibility of using the free concept map technique in social research. To cope with this question, the author defines three domains of examination. The first one addresses the theoretical background of the research technique along with it's evolution from it's precursor - the mental models. Terminology used in literature and also later in the thesis will also be introduced within this domain. The second domain is dedicated to the introduction of our research, which used the free concept maps as a research tool. The analysis of data and their interpretations will pose as one of the conditions for the third domain - the comparison of the free concept map technique with the social survey technique. Research reports with a similar topics as the one we studied, the motivation od students to apply to university, will be used for comparison. Both techniques will be compared on the basis of in-advance prepared factors defined on the the basis of individual characteristics of each method. The outcome of the paper has the form of summary and critical analysis of the method.
Personal wiki = Brain 2.0
Ludwig, Petr

Language and information: Meaning in the Computer Era
Valeš, Miroslav ; Rosický, Antonín (advisor) ; Sigmund, Tomáš (referee)
One of the most significant human instrument is language. On the one hand it makes communication and coordination with another individuals possible and on the other hand its meaning is crucial just within the scope of one person, whereas it acts as outer reality comprehension and handling instrument. This thesis describes the relation between a man and information that are presented in the form of language. Due to the utilization of the most important topics reaching the Cognitive science, Systems science or for instance philosophy, it forms compact framework appropriate for setting more exercisable point of view. Thus the thesis content itself contains topics primarily fundamental to the personal meaning and concretely it reflects essential ideas on the topic of benefits, application and the human dependence on language. The finale is devoted to the evaluation and the creation of conclusions about more suitable approaches in the context of the current, modern era.
